Subject: EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN
The film I decided to watch is called Eat Drink Man Woman is a 1994 Taiwanese film directed by Ang Lee. This movie is about a Taiwanese family composed of a widowed father and 3 daughters. Everything is very unconventional to what I would expect to see from a Taiwanese movie. The first thing I noticed is that the family is Christian and they talk about how they would not marry someone who is not in their religion but as we find out in the end the eldest sister marries a Buddhist however she makes him convert to Christianity. The youngest sister gets pregnant out of wed. The middle sister is having an affair with a married man and other men too. The father at the end of the movie we find out that he is having a love affair with a woman that could be the age of one of his daughters. He also loves too cook and food is very much a central theme in the movie.
I think Lee is trying to challenge the traditional values of a what it means to have a family because they may seem like a very dysfunctional family but at the end of the day everyone is really happy with the individualist decisions they end up making. This could be a great movie to show to older students and talk about the transformation from the traditional to the modern family in South East Asia.
