The article by Muragaki Norimasa, From Kokai nikki (Diary of a Voyage Abroad), was fascinating. Norimasa, describes the high honor of being selected to represent Japan as an ambassador to the United States in 1854 to ratify the Harris Treaty. I founded interesting that one of the first things he makes note of if people taking their hats off in homage to George Washington as they pass his house. Another, thing he makes a note of, women been present in the government office, something that in Japan is not practiced. Norimasa, and the rest of the Japanese officials are extremely concerned, with following the proper etiquette when meeting President Buchanan, but are surprised that there is none. This I think, will be surprised as well for my students.
